March is National Kidney Month
Did you know there are an estimated 37 million Americans with kidney disease, and most do not know that have it? Also, did you know that, in Louisiana alone, there are over 460,000 citizens with chronic kidney disease, over 16,000 kidney patients on dialysis, and 1,800 kidney patients awaiting a life-saving kidney transplant? Therefore, attention must be brought to this often overlooked, but increasingly common disease whose major risk factors are diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of kidney failure and age over 60. Untreated, kidney disease can lead to kidney failure.
During the month of March, the National Kidney Foundation of Louisiana hosts different events in order to bring awareness to chronic kidney disease and the epidemic that it is in Louisiana.
